A combination of chorusdelay and reverb does not sound particularly exciting at first glance. But the new Space Rider multi-effect plugin from Waves has got a few cool tricks up its sleeve. Waves claims that it can spare you the hassle of setting up multiple effect busses and lanes of automation – let’s see what they mean by that.

To start with, you can send the chorus to the delay and the delay to the reverb at the click of a button, thereby creating a custom blend of the effects to suit your track. The three effects themselves have familiar controls (chorus intensity and width, delay time and feedback, reverb decay, pre-delay, damping and width). However, they also offer a couple of twists for more sound design possibilities, such as modulation and stereo offset for the delay, and highpass/lowpass filters for the delay and reverb.

The most interesting feature, however, is the namesake Rider section at the bottom. This can be assigned to any parameter, so you can control or automate things to create spatial effects that follow the music. It also lets you morph between different effects. Moreover, the Rider can also respond to an envelope shaper that reacts to the input signal, so the effect follows the dynamics of the track. Pretty neat!

While it’s true that you could achieve most of these things by setting up three separate effect busses and automating three plugins and the signal flow between them, this would indeed be much more work. If you’re looking for a multi-effect that delivers quick results and responds dynamically to your music, Space Rider is definitely worth checking out.

Price and availability
