SSL Native FlexVerb plug-in is now and only today available for $18 (down from $279)! Here’s the deal!

Solid State Logic Native FlexVerb deal at Plugin Boutique

SSL remains among the recording industry greats to this day, embodying both quality and innovation for 5 decades (and counting). This goes for both the hardware and software realms of pro audio. Native FlexVerb is an example of SSL’s excellence with the latter. It’s a comprehensive reverb plug-in with Room, Hall, Plate, and Chamber simulations. At this price, it’s worth adding to any plug-in collection.

The SSL Native FlexVerb plug-in generates room, hall, plate, and chamber reverbs with plenty of sound shaping options. In addition to the typical parameters, which we’ll talk about in a second, they include a 6-band EQ and compressor.

The available reverb and effects controls are input and output volume, early reflections, pre-delay, diffusion, size, reverb time, and modulation (rate, depth). A visual analyzer represents the generated reverb graphically.

SSL Native FlexVerb – Price and availability

You can have Solid State Logic Native FlexVerb here at Thomann for the party price of $18 (down from a decidedly non-party $279). The offer is valid only today (February 20, 2024). The plug-in works under macOS 10.12+ and Windows 7+ in AU, AAX, VST, and VST3 64-bit formats.

You need a free iLok account (or a paid USB dongle) for authorization. An unrestricted demo version and a PDF user manual are also available for download from the developer’s website.

The post Recreating the Classic Roland Jupiter 8 sound with Software Plugins appeared first on gearnews.com.

]]>

Easily one of the most famous polysynths of all time, the Roland Jupiter-8 was Roland’s first-ever high-end analogue synth keyboard. We take a look at how to recreate its iconic sound with software plug-ins.

The Legendary Roland Jupiter 8

If you’re into synthesizers, then undoubtedly you’ll have heard the Roland Jupiter 8. Without a doubt one of the most famous polysynths of all time, the Jupiter-8 was Japan’s answer to the American Sequential Circuits Prophet 5.

Released back in 1981, it was Roland’s first-ever high-end analogue synth keyboard. Its architecture and the glistening texture of the sound produced makes it an incredibly unique and versatile instrument.

What Defines The Jupiter 8 Sound?

If you had to define the Jupiter 8 sound, what would you best use to describe it? Complex, evolving pads that seem to engulf you completely along with percussive crystalline tones. The Jupiter 8’s onboard arpeggiator also contributes to its signature touch (think Rio by Duran Duran).

Clearly, it’s a sound that’s as revered and desirable now as it was back in 1981; consequently, these iconic vintage keyboards change hands today at around seven or even eight times their original price!

However, there are ways to achieve similar results sonically using software recreations. Let’s discuss our picks of the best Jupiter-8 software synth recreations, how to recreate the sound and take a look a brief back at its illustrious history in recorded music.

Which plug-ins to use?

Always think ahead before purchasing software. Acquiring a new plug-in just for one sound isn’t the best way forward if you’re new to this, so consider possibilities. Luckily for us all, the Jupiter-8 is incredibly diverse so it’s hard to lose no matter which route you take. Most studios will have one or more of these plug-ins and each has different strengths:

Spectrasonics Omnisphere 2

It might be overkill for simply doing a bit of analogue modeling, but Omnisphere 2 is arguably the most authentic-sounding softsynth available. The ability to use real Jupiter-8 samples from the Soundsource library and combine them with Omnisphere’s ultra-realistic oscillators makes it hard to beat.

Spectrasonics Omnisphere 2
Omnisphere 2 does great emulations of classic synths.

There are more cost-effective ways to get similar sounds, but they don’t have the synthesis dream team from Spectrasonics behind them. The combination of the features, interface, and patch library sets it apart from any synth available.

Meanwhile, if you consider the expense of purchasing individual plug-ins for each style of sound you need to create, the value certainly becomes more apparent.

U-he Diva

As mentioned before in this series, Diva is a virtual analogue monster that has been around for years. Not only can it recreate Jupiter-8 sounds, but other vintage classics too.

You have the ability to mix and match your oscillator, filter, and envelope sections to capture characteristics from Roland, Moog, and Sequential Circuits architecture.

U-He Diva
Diva has a unique analogue modeling engine.

More than anything though, Diva focuses on details. Apart from its effects and extensive modulation capabilities, you have precise control over individual oscillator voices.

Set the amount of analogue variance for a more realistic emulation, or you can even delve into more experimental territory.

Arturia Jup-8 V

Introduced in 2007, the Jup-8 V was the first-ever plug-in Roland Jupiter-8 Software Synth emulation available. Currently, in version 4, Jup-8 V features Arturia’s TAE® (True Analog Emulation) technology. Features such as analogue dispersion affect the drift of certain parameters for added realism.

Arturia Jup-8 V
Arturia’s Jup-8 V plug-in was the earliest Jupiter-8 emulation.

Additionally, you’ll find more advanced features such as deeper modulation, sequencer, keyboard tracking, and effects sections. Overall, the Jup-8 V does a good job of balancing analogue emulation with more modern synthesis capabilities.

Roland Cloud Jupiter 8

As one would expect, the Roland Cloud Jupiter 8 plug-in is one of the most convincing emulations available. If your aim is to sound exactly like the original then this will certainly do the job.

Powered by Roland’s ACB (Analog Circuit Behavior) Modeling technology, the RC Jupiter 8 is also PLUG-OUT compatible for complete tactile control.

Roland Cloud JUPITER-8
Roland’s own JUPITER-8 plug-in.

The plug-in features basic effects, as well as unique features; for example, the condition knob ages the state of the vintage synthesizer you’re trying to replicate. In addition, the Jupiter-8 is available as an expansion model within Zenology.

Togu Audio Line TAL-J-8

One of the more recent additions to the family, the J-8 is one of the most detailed plug-ins that TAL has released to date.

Its sound may have a slightly darker character than Arturia or Roland’s Jupiter-8 plug-in versions, but it is every bit as authentic. As with the U-NO-LX, each oscillator can be individually tuned and filtered.

The TAL-J-8 is an incredible softsynth for the price.

There are a number of additional parameters for analogue realism and the inclusion of the Juno chorus is certainly a welcome one. What’s more, the TAL-J-8 allows two patches to be layered over its two panels and balanced with a mix control – a great feature!

 • More from TAL

Now that we know what tools to use, let’s look at the Jupiter 8’s role in popular music. Many famous artists have found the Jupiter 8 a source of songwriting inspiration. It’s undoubtedly an instrument that becomes one of the main focal points whenever it is used on a record.

Nick Rhodes began his fascination with the Jupiter-8 on Duran Duran’s Save A Prayer in 1982. Equally, it became the centerpiece of Michael Jackson’s biggest all-time hit, Thriller, released only months later.

The Jupiter 8 is used on countless albums and became the quintessential tool for synth-pop music production. An interesting fact is that both Queen‘s Radio Gaga and We Built This City by Starship were produced from demos written solely with the Jupiter-8 and a Linndrum.

Since those guilty pleasures of the mid-1980s, its sound has endured and reached through many genres. continuing its legacy in modern music.

Recreating the classic Jupiter-8 sound

As such a versatile instrument, your approach when trying to emulate a synth like this is completely dependent on the specific sound you’re working with. Each of the plug-ins we’ve mentioned has analogue circuitry modeling capabilities, so familiarize yourself with these features. Let’s discuss a few tips that should help you along the way:

 • The Jupiter-8 is known for its arpeggiator, keep in mind that its feel is far more of a feature than the notes being played.
 • The unison function uses all 8 voices to work as one, perfect for creating monster leads and bass sounds.
 • Unless you want it to take up the entire mix, roll off some of the low end, and remember, reverb is your friend.
 • When playing polyphonically, construct your chords in different octaves over the range of the keyboard as this will produce a richer sound.
 • Focus on the pitch of each sound you work with. Polyphonic glide, detune, and modulation are some of the most distinctive features of the Jupiter-8.

The post Waves Space Rider Multi-FX Plugin: Ready for Liftoff! appeared first on gearnews.com.

The new Waves Space Rider plugin is your ticket to the stratosphere. With a unique combination of chorus, delay, and reverb effects that can be dynamically controlled, Space Rider makes it easy to turn a bland sound into something interesting. Get it now for the low introductory price!

Waves Space Rider

A combination of chorusdelay and reverb does not sound particularly exciting at first glance. But the new Space Rider multi-effect plugin from Waves has got a few cool tricks up its sleeve. Waves claims that it can spare you the hassle of setting up multiple effect busses and lanes of automation – let’s see what they mean by that.

To start with, you can send the chorus to the delay and the delay to the reverb at the click of a button, thereby creating a custom blend of the effects to suit your track. The three effects themselves have familiar controls (chorus intensity and width, delay time and feedback, reverb decay, pre-delay, damping and width). However, they also offer a couple of twists for more sound design possibilities, such as modulation and stereo offset for the delay, and highpass/lowpass filters for the delay and reverb.

The most interesting feature, however, is the namesake Rider section at the bottom. This can be assigned to any parameter, so you can control or automate things to create spatial effects that follow the music. It also lets you morph between different effects. Moreover, the Rider can also respond to an envelope shaper that reacts to the input signal, so the effect follows the dynamics of the track. Pretty neat!

While it’s true that you could achieve most of these things by setting up three separate effect busses and automating three plugins and the signal flow between them, this would indeed be much more work. If you’re looking for a multi-effect that delivers quick results and responds dynamically to your music, Space Rider is definitely worth checking out.

Price and availability

During the introductory period, you can grab Waves Space Rider from Thomann* for just $44. The regular price will be $99. The plugin runs on macOS 10.15 or higher and Windows 10 or higher in VST, VST3, AU, and AAX formats.

JMG Sound Dropkick takes your bass drums to another level! With eight different processors for each component of the kick, is Dropkick the ultimate kick drum enhancer for EDM, Techno, and other electronic styles?

JMG Sound Dropkick

According to JMG Sound, Dropkick works across all electronic genres, from EDM and Drum & Bass to Techno, Trap, House, and more. The plugin is a purpose-built kick drum enhancer that combines various processing techniques to make your bass drums go BOOM. And best of all – you can grab it for about 20 bucks during the introductory period!

Each of the eight processors only has a single knob, but the developer says that there’s a lot going on under the hood. Phase Warp uses an array of analog-modeled filters to offset the lower frequencies, thereby shaping the character of the transient and reducing the peak level. Power is effectively another resonant filter that boosts the fundamental frequency and removes unwanted sub-harmonics.

Next up is DAMP, which reduces higher frequencies while keeping the transient intact. CLEAN is designed to remove boxiness and help the kick sit better in the mix. TRIM allows you to adjust the length of the kick trail to find the right balance between tightness and boominess.

SNAP is a transient processor that enhances the attack and punch of the kick. According to JMG Sound, it’s fine-tuned for kicks with frequency-dependent shaping of the attack stage to help keep the level in check. FIRE is a psychoacoustic processor that uses a combination of re-synthesis and analog-modeled saturation to enhance the sound of the kick. And finally, OVER is an “over-the-top” dynamics processor that stabilizes the low-end while bringing out high-end detail.

All of this combined makes Dropkick the ultimate toolkit for designing kick drums that stand out and turning weak bass drums into “super-kicks”, JMG Sound says. The audio examples sound promising – at the low introductory price, I’d say you can’t go wrong with this one.

Price and compatibility

During the introductory period, JMG Sound Dropkick is available from Plugin Boutique* for just $21. The regular price will be $76.

The plugin runs on macOS 10.10 or later and Windows 8 or later. It comes in VST, VST3, AU, and AAX formats.

Let's take a look at the best iOS DAWs for iPhones and iPads to record outside!

The post The Best iOS DAWs and Apps for iPhone and iPad 2024 appeared first on gearnews.com.

]]>

While it may be hard for veteran recording engineers to accept, there’s no denying that today’s technology makes it possible to record, mix, and prepare entire albums using iPhones and especially iPads. In order to fully realize such projects, you need more than just powerful hardware – a crucial component is the Digital Audio Workstation (DAW). But which iOS DAW is the best iOS DAW?

Answering this question is not trivial, as the preferences of music producers vary greatly. There are many different iOS DAWs on the market, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. To find the best iOS DAW, consider the different options while keeping your needs and working methods in mind. Of course, you do need an iPhone or iPad.

It’s all about finding a DAW that offers an intuitive user interface, has a wide range of features, and is reliable. Ultimately, the best iOS DAW is the one that allows the user to realize their creative vision efficiently and effectively.

iOS and iPadOS DAWs: pros and cons

In the world of Apple devices, the operating system plays a central role, with macOS at the heart of Mac computers. Compare with iOS on iPhones, and iPadOS, a version of iOS, designed specifically for iPads with their larger displays and more powerful hardware components.

It’s worth noting how impressive the performance of these mobile devices is, having moved to ARM architecture long before Mac computers. This technological advancement has led to an extensive range of programs, particularly in the area of audio applications.

The distinction between tablets and computers is particularly evident in the way we interact with these devices: Tablets such as the iPad are operated exclusively via a touch display, be it with a finger or a stylus pen. This unique way of interaction requires the software to be designed explicitly for a touch-input workflow, primarily digital audio workstations.

For the best iOS DAW, it is therefore essential that it is not only compatible with the powerful features of iPadOS but also offers intuitive and responsive touch operation. This ensures that music producers and creatives have full control over their musical projects right at the tip of their fingers.

Apple GarageBand belongs in our list of “The best iOS DAW”

Best iOS DAW: Apple Garagband

Best iOS DAW: Apple Garageband

GarageBand, the free DAW developed by Apple, is perfectly matched to the company’s own hardware, making it an excellent choice for use on iPad and iPhone. GarageBand allows you to start recording immediately and create your songs with various virtual instruments. In addition, the app offers an impressive selection of virtual amps, pianos, effects, loops, and samples that are essential for producing and composing.

The operation of GarageBand may seem unfamiliar initially, but after a bit of getting used to it, the app is exceptionally user-friendly. It is not only suitable for beginners who want to complete their songs from start to finish but also for anyone who wants to record ideas quickly and easily on the go.

GarageBand supports audio and MIDI recordings and allows exporting projects in various formats. However, stem export and pre-mastering in GarageBand is somewhat cumbersome. For these more advanced tasks, switching to a computer and a more fully-fledged DAW is best.

Still, when it comes to the best iOS DAW for fast, efficient, and mobile music production, GarageBand is an excellent choice. Incidentally, finished songs can be imported directly into the professional version Logic Pro, which is also available for the iPad.

Apple Logic Pro as the best iOS DAW?

Logic Pro for iOS/iPadOS brings Logic Pro features to mobile devices with almost all of the instruments and effects from the macOS version included. For instance, legendary instruments like Sculpture, Alchemy, some older e-synthesizers, and even multi-effects like Step FX are available. In addition, the app is MPE-capable. However, it lacks Logic’s MIDI environment, pedal board, and special effects.

The app supports AUv3, third-party MIDI effects, and has a touch-optimized interface. It includes Alchemy, Retro Synth, and the new Beat Breaker instrument. Logic Pro for iPad is AUv3 and Ableton Link compatible and allows imports from the macOS version.

It is available for €4.99 per month or €49 per year, including a one-month trial. These features make it a top option for the best iOS DAW. Definitely a contender for a top position as the best iOS DAW.

Steinberg Cubasis

Cubasis, developed by Steinberg, is the counterpart to the renowned DAWs Cubase and Nuendo for iOS and iPadOS, respectively. As the little sibling, Cubasis offers a powerful alternative for mobile production. Cubasis is as intuitive as Cubase.

Best iOS DAW: Cubasis from Steinberg

Best iOS DAW: Cubasis from Steinberg

In terms of recording capacity, Cubasis allows you to record up to 24 tracks simultaneously at 24-bit quality and a maximum sample rate of 96 kHz. The number of audio and MIDI tracks is not limited, but the CPU performance of the device ultimately sets the limit.

Each track in Cubasis offers eight effect slots, eight send effects, and eight master effects. Some plug-ins are already included, others are unlocked after registration. It is also possible to purchase further effects and synthesizers through in-app purchases.

Steinberg Cubasis presents itself as one of the iPad’s most comprehensive and professional DAWs. This quality comes at a price: at 59.99 Euros, it is one of the more expensive options on the market.

Image Line FL Studio Mobile

For users who already use FL Studio from Image-Line on their computer, FL Studio Mobile offers a seamless way to continue their musical projects on their tablet. The mobile DAW comes with 15 effect plug-ins and a selection of virtual sound generators, including a sampler, various drums, and loops.

FL Studio Mobile

FL Studio Mobile

The extensive MIDI features of FL Studio Mobile are particularly noteworthy and sure to delight many fans. In addition, the app also offers the option of recording and editing audio.

The workflows for recording audio and MIDI and for producing beats in FL Studio Mobile are pleasant and efficient. However, the mixing capabilities of this DAW are rather basic. Another aspect that deserves attention is the neon look of the user interface, which is modern and eye-catching but may not be pleasant for every user in the long term.

For users looking for the best iOS DAW and already familiar with FL Studio, FL Studio Mobile is an exciting option, mainly because of its compatibility and expansion options. However, potential users should remember the above aspects to ensure that the app suits their needs and preferences. It is available for 12.99 USD.

Ableton Note

Ableton Note is the long-awaited mobile notepad for users, live performers, and fans of Ableton Live. This idea has been around for years and has finally been realized by Ableton, the Berlin-based company.

Ableton Note mixing screen

Ableton Note mixing screen

Note is like a miniature version of Live. Working with the app is very similar to the desktop version of Ableton Live. This is my first impression as an Ableton Live fanboy who has been producing music with this DAW for a long time.

“Note” serves as a musical notepad, a kind of notepad for Ableton Live, and therefore only belongs in our top list of “best iOS DAW” to a limited extent. But it is more than just a tool for collecting ideas. With the iOS software, you can record musical sketches easily and intuitively on the go or anywhere with your iDevice. It allows you to bring your creative ideas to life wherever you are. You can find more information here in our checked out section.

Bandlab Music Making Studio as the best iOS DAW?

BandLab is probably known to many for its online DAW or for the acquisition of Sonar, which is now known as Cakewalk by BandLab. In addition, BandLab has something exciting to offer for iPad and iPhone – and it’s even free.

Mixing screen in BandLab

Mixing screen in BandLab

BandLab Music Making Studio, an app for mobile devices, focuses on working with loops. These can be recorded and edited on a total of 12 tracks. The range is complemented by a series of effect plug-ins, groove kits, and around 200 virtual MIDI instruments of varying quality.

One particularly interesting feature is the option to have your songs mastered automatically. Although the result of this automatic mastering will probably not reach the quality of a real pre-mastering, it is often a significant improvement over a completely unprocessed track. And best of all, this tool is entirely free!

If you’re looking for the best iOS DAW and are particularly keen on free, BandLab Music Making Studio is an attractive option. It’s an excellent option for music makers on the go who want to realize their ideas quickly and easily without having to sacrifice essential functions.

MedlyLabs Medly

Medly occupies a special place in the world of iOS DAWs with a visual design that is characterized by its minimalist, modern style. It reminds me a little of a blue Ableton Live. Medly was even awarded App of the Year in Japan and South Korea in 2016. This app allows you to record audio and MIDI data and divide it into different song parts. With these parts, you can quickly and easily change your track’s structure.

The app provides you with 16 virtual instruments, 100 loops, and several effects. The handling of pitch bends, fades and effect automation is comparatively good. However, I miss a classic editor GUI, and tracks are mixed via a fold-out mixer.

For music producers who are looking for the best iOS DAW and appreciate a clear, well-organized workspace, Medly could be an interesting option. The intuitive and streamlined user interface makes it particularly attractive to those who value efficiency and speed in the production process. This DAW offers a unique approach that sets it apart from other DAWs on the market and deserves special mention. Medly is free in the App Store and has a variety of in-app purchases available.

n-Track Studio

n-Track Studio for iPad is an excellent option, especially for a free DAW. There are a few options for those who want the full functionality of n-Track Studio. You can either rent the DAW as a monthly subscription for between 1 and 5 euros or buy it for around 30 USD.

This investment gives you unlimited audio and MIDI tracks and a 64-bit audio engine. Sample rates above 48 kHz are possible but require a compatible interface and can reach up to 192 kHz. These impressive technical specifications make n-Track Studio the best iPad DAW for many.

The operation of n-Track Studio is intuitive and fluid, which makes working with the software very comfortable. Visually, the DAW is appealing and modern, but at the same time retains traditional elements.

Beatmaker 3

Beatmaker 3 is a must-have app for those who specialize in creating beats. Although it lacks some features you might expect from a genuinely comprehensive audio app, there is still a lot going on to make exciting beats with. You create beats with virtual pads reminiscent of a Launchpad or Push controller.

You can do this with virtual instruments and record them in a timeline or sequencer. In addition to audio recording, Beatmaker 3 also allows you to use MIDI controllers. A solid mixer for your tracks helps you complete your song.

Another remarkable aspect of Beatmaker 3 is the user interface, which is very pleasantly designed. This makes it possible to work with the DAW for a long time without tiring your eyes. With a price of 29.99 Euros, Beatmaker 3 is not one of the cheapest options. But the consistently good ratings in the App Store speak for the quality and user-friendliness of the app.

Audiobus – a perfect companion to the best iOS DAW

For music producers serious about making music with their iPhone or iPad, I strongly recommend getting Audiobus as one of the first apps. This app is indispensable as it allows signal communication between different audio applications.

Audiobus 3

Audiobus 3

In addition, AUv3 effects and sound generators can also be integrated into Audiobus. This significantly increases the flexibility and versatility of musical production.

An outstanding feature of Audiobus is the way in which everything is clearly displayed in a matrix together with your controllers. This makes navigating much more accessible. In addition, Audiobus offers the option to synchronize everything via a MIDI clock.

Priced at 9.99 USD, Audiobus offers tremendous value. As a central element in the quest for the best iOS DAW, Audiobus proves indispensable. It allows you to create an efficient and seamless music production environment on mobile devices.

AUM

AUM is an exciting option for those not entirely satisfied with Audiobus or looking for an alternative. AUM’s range of functions is very similar to that of Audiobus. From routing to effects, virtual sound generators, samples, and MIDI, AUM offers a wide range of functions. One significant difference that makes AUM attractive to many users is the design of the interface.

AUM for iPAd

AUM’s intuitive and user-friendly design makes it possible to perform a variety of musical tasks efficiently and effectively. This makes the app a strong contender in the search for the best iOS DAW. It is a good choice for anyone who values a precise and customizable interface.

The best iOS DAW is …

If you use your iPad and other iOS devices to record and mix sounds or even create entire songs, I’d be interested to hear about your experiences. Is there any software that we may have overlooked in our review? Which app do you think is the best iOS DAW for your musical projects?

Your opinion is very important to us, and we look forward to learning more about your experiences and preferences. Arturia Efx REFRACT is a unique stereo multi-effect that combines unison processing with a bunch of secondary effects to mangle your audio in all sorts of creative ways. And here’s the best bit: Arturia Efx REFRACT is FREE for a limited time! Don’t miss this awesome Christmas gift from Arturia!

Arturia Efx REFRACT

Arturia’s annual holiday gift has become a beloved tradition. In recent years, the French developer generously stuffed our stockings with limited-time freebies like MS-20 FilterTape MELLO-FIChorus JUN-6, and Rev PLATE-140. This year, they’ve come up with something extra-special. Arturia Efx REFRACT is a multi-effect unlike any other, and it’s available for FREE for a limited time!

Efx REFRACT revolves around the concept of unison processing. The plugin duplicates your input signal up to eight times, creating a stack of voices. You can then turn up the Refraction amount to introduce slight pitch variations and modulations, thereby thickening and widening the sound. Think orchestra vs. string quartet.

5 Secondary Effects

But that’s just the beginning. Arturia Efx REFRACT also includes a second processing stage that offers a choice of effects, including bandpass and comb filters, a bit crusherdistortion, and a harmonizer. The cool thing is that these are applied to each “refracted” voice individually and differently. The higher the refraction amount, the larger the differences between the effects on each individual voice. There’s also an LFO for modulating the refraction amount and secondary effect.

This unique idea should lend itself to all sorts of creative experiments and unique sounds. According to Arturia, Efx REFRACT can deliver anything from subtle size and character to sweeping transitions and transformations. Fascinating stuff!

Price and compatibility

Arturia Efx REFRACT is now available FOR FREE on Arturia’s website until January 4, 2024. In recent years, Arturia’s servers sometimes struggled to handle the amount of requests, to have a little patience if you don’t get through right away.

After January 4, Efx REFRACT will presumably become part of Arturia’s regular line-up of effect plugins. It should also become part of the next version of the Arturia FX Collection.

SSL PlateVerb: Classic Plate Reverb with Modern Features https://www.gearnews.com/ssl-plateverb/ https://www.gearnews.com/ssl-plateverb/#comments Tue, 12 Dec 2023 17:58:30 +0000 https://www.gearnews.com/?p=169537 SSL PlateVerbThe new SSL PlateVerb plugin combines classic plate reverb sounds with modern features and a sleek pedal-style interface.

The post SSL PlateVerb: Classic Plate Reverb with Modern Features appeared first on gearnews.com.

SSL PlateVerb is the first in a new series of boutique reverb plugins from the British manufacturer. Featuring a streamlined “pedal-style” interface, SSL PlateVerb pairs classic plate reverb sounds with modern features for contemporary productions.

SSL PlateVerb

The first thing that meets the eye is of course the user interface. PlateVerb looks distinctively different from other SSL plugins that tend to have a console-style appearance. Taking clues from guitar pedals (and presumably from other pedal-style plugins – Eventide comes to mind), PlateVerb features a clear, easy-to-use interface that makes it easy to dial in the sound you want.

According to SSL, the new plugin is based on two separate algorithms that emulate the early and late reflections of classic plate reverbs. The large Time knob in the center lets you adjust the decay time from 100 milliseconds to three seconds – that’s quite a lot for a plate reverb. To the left and right are additional controls for SizeDensity, and Colour. You can also adjust the balance between the early and late reflections.

The Colour knob is particularly interesting, as it lets you modify the harmonic content of the reverb tail to mimic the sound of different plate materials. Other features not found on many other plate reverbs are the Freeze and Kill buttons below the knobs, which lend themselves to creative experiments and unusual reverb effects. Moreover, the damping section lets you control the decay of high and low frequencies separately, which offers a great deal of control over the reverb tail.

Ducking with external sidechain

Furthermore, SSL PlateVerb offers a built-in ducking feature with an external sidechain option. With the ability to “listen” to the input signal or to a different signal altogether, this opens up vast creative possibilities for controlling the reverb level musically. The ducking feature also gives you precise control over the threshold, attack, and release.

With the combination of classic plate reverb tones, modern shaping options, and an uncluttered, easy-to-use interface, SSL PlateVerb certainly looks like a great addition to any producer’s reverb arsenal.

Price and compatibility

SSL PlateVerb is now available at Thomann for $104.

The plugin runs on macOS Big Sur or higher and Windows 10 or higher in VST, VST3, AU, and AAX formats and stand-alone. You’ll need an iLok account or dongle for authorization.
