Say hello to the redesigned MOTU 828 audio interface
The trusty 828 gets a long awaited revamp.
The redesigned MOTU 828 has arrived in time for NAMM 2024. We find out about its newly updated features for recording and content creation.
Introduced over two decades ago, the original 828 quickly became a mainstay in professional project studios. Renowned for the quality of its converters and preamps, as well as providing a flexible routing solution, the 828 was especially loved by Mac users.
The redesigned MOTU 828
Like its predecessor, the new 828 has a pair of XLR combo preamps with gain controls on its front panel, alongside a pair of individually controlled headphones outputs.
However, instead of the clunky screen, you can now get an operational overview with the 3.9-inch (480 x 128) full-color LCD display with metering on both analogue and digital I/O.
On the rear panel, there are eight analogue TRS line inputs, a pair of insert send/return channels, and eight DC-coupled TRS line outputs. This means the 828 supports re-amping and modular CV control workflows.
Besides the look of the screen and controls, the new 828 has also borrowed features like loopback from the popular M-series interfaces, making it perfect for live streaming.
Meanwhile, the CueMix 5 app allows wireless control from multiple devices simply by running them on the same network as the host PC, Mac, or iPad.
The market may have shifted considerably since the 828 series ruled the roost, but this new version still provides a great solution with a pro feature set that is rugged enough for use on the road.

The USB C port is very much appreciated, no Ethernet port makes this a non-starter for me though. Bummer.
I’ve always been an RME guy, but since the prices for new RME interfaces have soared I’m getting more and more tempted to switch over to MOTU. The new 828 would make for a great alternative to the much more expensive RME Fireface 802 FS.
hello
Hmmm….No ethernet? It looks like MOTU is abandoning their AVB platform. I hope not. However, this doesn’t look good for AVB. This new 828 is already a no-go for me since I can’t integrate it into my current AVB setup. I will probably be better off with the current (or should I say older?) model, which does support AVB.
