Few effects define a musical era in quite the same way that digital 1980s reverb does. Although we’ve seen so many advancements in audio since then, those classic ’80s reverb sounds are still popular and sought after today.

There are numerous factors that led to this – and few of them are completely rational – so together we’ll look at digital reverb and how to go about using it in your production.

We know it’s not purely due to the sound because we don’t use the same techniques as we did when digital reverb was first introduced. It must be a combination of factors, including the interface design and the nostalgic sentiment of using retro-styled creative tools.

The story of digital reverb

It begins in 1976 with the EMT 250. Digital reverb provided a controlled environmental ambience with a low noise floor, which was revolutionary in the recording process. Until that time, the use of plates, springs, and re-amping had been some of the methods commonly used to add spatial characteristics to a sound.

Studios also evolved drastically due to the introduction of the SSL 4000 E series(and later G series) consoles. This provided unprecedented routing flexibility and when combined with the newly available tools of the time like analogue synthesizers and digital samplers, we got the magical explosion in the record industry that was the 1980s.

Digital reverb units like the AMS RMX16, Lexicon 224X, Yamaha REV-7, and the Sony DRE-2000 became icons of this era. They were used on so many of our favourite records and engineering superstars like Chris Lorde-Alge still use vintage reverb units or their software equivalents in every mix.

Using 1980s reverb in your studio

Like many effects we use for tonal quality, reverbs are available in several formats. The set-and-forget approach we take with leveling amplifiers is often used with reverbs too. This is due to the rather involved technical process that comes with designing your own reverb patches.

Good reverb units were never cheap, but you can get great-sounding reverb without the risk of buying a temperamental and astronomically priced vintage reverb. There are factors to consider like the advantages of software vs hardware, so we’ll check out some options and find something suitable for your setup.

Reverb software plug-ins

Having multiple instances of quality reverb plug-ins available in a single click is an incredibly powerful creative tool. Software provides instant gratification without patch cables, which makes it extremely convenient.

Remember though, that some vintage reverb units were one-trick ponies in the studio. So, unless you’re after the sound of a specific make or model, ensure you select something that has some versatility.

UAD AMS RMX16 Expanded

Developed in collaboration with AMS founder, Mark Crabtree, the AMS RMX16 Expanded plug-in is an authentic emulation of one of the most famous reverb units of all time. The no-nonsense UI gives you the classic controls without menu diving, which makes it a pleasure to use.

AMS RMX16 Expanded Plug-In

Like most UAD plug-ins, it sounds great, but it also has all the original patches so you get a realistic feel of using the RMX16 reverb in all its glory. All the famous algorithms are included, like the ambience and non-linear reverb settings, and it’s now available natively for any DAW.

Audio Ease Altiverb 8

Quite simply, Altiverb 8 is the Omnisphere of reverb plug-ins and one of the most powerful reverbs available in hardware or software. If you work as an engineer or sound designer in games, TV, film, or music – you’ve probably used it before.

Audio Ease Altiverb 8: More powerful and more compatible than ever
Audio Ease Altiverb 8

Among its amazing spaces and IR designing capabilities, Altiverb also offers astonishingly realistic vintage reverbs from AMS, Lexicon, Yamaha, and many others. It is pricey, but at least you won’t be needing another reverb any time soon.

Reverb Effects Pedals

Not all reverb pedals are exclusively designed for guitars. Some offer line-level I/O to suit other instruments like synths and drum machines. This is great for using them on aux sends from your mixer, just like you would with outboard rack gear.

Apart from that, they offer great sounding effects and some even allow you to stack multiple reverb patches and create more complex layered sounds. The creative immediacy of working with a live tweakable instrument also has its own appeal.

Meris Mercury 7 and MercuryX

Inspired by Vangelis’ shimmering, modulated Lexicon 224 reverb sounds from the Bladerunner soundtrack, the Mercury 7 is a pedal version of its 500 series counterpart. The Meris 24-Bit AD/DA with 32-bit floating point DSP engine combined with true analogue signal path means you get studio-quality sound.

  • Meris Mercury 7 reverb pedal
  • Advanced ARM based Reverb

In addition, the Mercury 7 offers two different reverb algorithms (Ultraplate/Cathedra) and extensive tone-shaping capabilities. Apart from the EQ, the pitch vector allows you to accurately shift the wet signal for whichever instrument you’re using.

Empress Effects Reverb

Empress Effects are known for creating some of the most innovative designs when it comes to pedals and the Empress Reverb is no exception. Not only is this an amazing-sounding reverb, but it’s also a very versatile creative tool with 32 reverb algorithms and the ability to further update the firmware via SD card.

500 Series reverbs

500 Series effects give you much of the same quality as 19″ rack gear, but the more compact format provides certain benefits. In studio, these are great units if you don’t have much space and they offer excellent portability for live use.

All it takes is the right 500 series chassis and you can put your own rig together. Be aware of the space requirements before you look at purchasing these units, as some are larger than others.

Meris Mercury 7 500

The Mercury 7 500 has all the same features as the pedal version save for the swell and bypass switches. The fundamental difference is that the 500 series version is a single-space mono unit with more expandability.

Meris Mercury 7 500
Meris Mercury 7 500 series reverb

It is both stereo and surround linkable, which makes it extremely formidable considering the cost of high-end studio reverbs. Overall, the approach of the Mercury 7 500 is refreshing, as it encourages real-time sound-shaping rather than sticking to one patch.

Rackmount reverbs

This is where we get into the higher-end side of reverbs available. You certainly don’t need to spend $2000 simply to create a decent 80s reverb sound. However, it will get you a top-of-the-line reverb capable of creating reverbs for any application.

The great thing about high-end hardware reverbs is that they don’t seem to date, lose much resale value, or go out of style. Once you have one of these in your rack, you are far less likely to keep buying every newly released product as you would with software.

Lexicon PCM92

Lexicon’s PCM92 has all the features you’d expect from a professional stereo reverb. This includes 28 new and classic reverb, delay, and modulation effects and a library of over 700 presets to choose from.

Model 82

[Originally posted on 8th June 2022] Softube never likes to say what synthesizer it bases its emulations on. But in this case, it’s clearly the Roland SH-101. While the synth was produced in the early 80s, the vibe Softube are going for is set firmly in the club culture of the 1990s and they nailed it.

Both the Model 72 and the Model 84 were brilliant, so I’m expecting great things from this emulation. The idea is to try to capture the feelings as well as the sound of this synth. Softube says something about “Rock & Roll Science” which conjures up images of trashed laboratories and professors snorting coke off each other’s arses. But it could also mean that the designers have gone beyond the attention to detail and inhabit some kind of heart and soul emulation. Or maybe let’s get a grip on ourselves and enjoy it as a mono synth with a couple of waveforms, a cool filter and a useful envelope.

Softube went to a lot of trouble to model the sequencer and arpeggiator in the hope of instilling Model 82 with that elusive inspiration and improvisational quality.

No software emulation would be complete without some extras. The interface has been optimised for a quicker workflow, and velocity and aftertouch have been stuck in. And there’s a new Drive knob for a bit of saturation and some stereo enhancements.

Honestly, it looks and sounds totally brilliant and while it’s been done before I always enjoy Softube’s take on these things. I’m also loving the crappy signs of wear on the GUI.

Modular

The other groovy thing Softube does is pull the synthesizer apart into individual modules that can then run inside Softube Modular. And so you get the VCO, LFO, VCF-VCA, FX and ENV as separate patchable modules.

This is also brilliant.

So, for €79 Softube has nailed the Roland SH-101 in software form with all the right nuance and extras. Great stuff.

u-he is offered a sneak preview of the upcoming Zebralette 3 software synth at NAMM 2024. The new version of Zebralette, a long-standing freeware favorite. Now the public beta testing phase has started – you are allowed to download and test. Exciting!

Zebralette 3 as public beta

[Update 17.02.2024] From now on you can download the announced public beta of Zebralette 3 and test it extensively via the u-he kvr forum post (see here). You can also download user guides and get further information about the new release. If you find any problems and bugs, you should also describe them below the blog post. Sounds great!

u-he Zebralette 3 is almost here!

[Update 17.01.2024] Like the predecessor, Zebralette 3 is an offspring of the more powerful Zebra, so this means that there will eventually also be a Zebra 3. The purpose of Zebralette is to showcase the capabilities of Zebra’s oscillators and MSEG (multi-stage envelope generator).

The free software synth offers one Zebra oscillator and one MSEG, as well as a bunch of modulators and effects from u-he’s bag of tricks. That doesn’t sound like much, but as the oscillator is so powerful, it’s a pretty versatile synth in and of itself. Over the course of ten years, u-he has worked to expand the sonic possibilities even further and improve the consistency between the visual editors.

According to u-he, Zebralette 3 is almost ready to go into public beta testing – possibly even within the next couple of weeks. The developer had hoped to have the beta version ready for NAMM, but there are still a few bugs that need ironing out. As soon as that’s taken care of, you’ll be able to download Zebralette 3 and check out the new version of this popular freeware synth.

So what about Zebra 3? While u-he hasn’t set a release date yet, the progress that they made on Zebralette means that they’re already pretty far along. They’ve also made a lot of progress on Zebra components that aren’t part of Zebralette. We’ll keep you posted!

More information about u-he Zebralette 3

u-he Zebralette 3 should enter public beta testing any time now. The new version of the software synth will still be available for free.

For a limited time, you can save 85% on the SSL Native LMC+ compressor plug-in, which has been reduced from $119.99 to only $17.99.

The Listening Mic Compressor was an almost hidden feature built into SSL consoles in the 1980s. It became a secret weapon for producers and engineers of the era, where it was particularly effective on drums.

SSL Native LMC+

As it was designed to make even quiet speech at the back of the control room audible, the LMC worked wonders on the gated drum reverb sound of the 1980s. Provided the beat isn’t complex, the compressor merges the wet and dry signal in a uniquely cohesive way.

The SSL LMC+ plug-in is a recreation of the integrated compressor from the SSL 4000E console’s talkback circuit. However, the LMC+ plug-in goes beyond the functionality of the original hardware, making it a more creative and versatile dynamics processor.

The plug-in is enhanced with features from the LMC+ 500-series module. This includes a sidechain input for triggering the compressor with an external signal, and variable high-pass and low-pass filters, so you can isolate the processing range.

SSL LMC+

In addition, the Scoop button inverts the phase of the wet signal while the Split button gives you access to bandpass-subtraction mode.

The Cherry Audio CR-78 is its very first drum machine plugin with a recreation of a true classic, the first programmable, microprocessor-controlled, analog CR-78!

Cherry Audio CR-78 And A Short History

Before the 808 and 909, Roland had a long and rich history in the world of rhythm boxes. They’ve been building such devices since 1964. However, 1978’s CompuRhythm CR-78 was their, and the world’s, first programmable unit.

Alex Ball demonstrates the original CR-78

It seems inconceivable these days to have a drum machine that you can’t program, so the CR-78 was a huge hit! And it was a huge hit that ended up on numerous huge hits! The list of songs and artists is a veritable who’s who of pop. OMD, Hall & Oates, Genesis, Phill Collins, Ultravox, Blondie, Roxy Music, The Cars, and Tears For Fears, to name just a few.

The CR-78 is still gaining new friends to this day and remains incredibly popular. So it is an utter delight to see Cherry Audio beat Roland Cloud to the punch (again) with their new CR-78 plugin. Everything we love about the original – lovingly modelled, not sampled – with all the improvements that a 21st-century rhythm nut craves!

Cherry Audio’s CR-78 Launch Video

Cherry On Top

How does it improve on the original? First up, the rather clunky original method of programming a CR-78 has been replaced with the later X0X style of step sequencing found on later Roland units. The original CR-78 required an optional programming unit. Bizarrely, Roland only ever made 2000 of these, one-quarter of the total number of CR-78s that they made!

Cherry Audio CR-78

Cherry Audio’s CR-78 goes way beyond just improving the programming. All the original preset rhythms and variations/fills are there but now every voice can be edited. There’s an FX section (Overdrive, Delay, Flanger & Reverb), a mixer with independent level, pan, and solo/mute per voice, and a global EQ and compressor. Once you’ve programmed your beat masterpiece, you can drag it OUT of the CR-78 as either a MIDI track in your DAW or, if using the standalone version, a Standard MIDI File (SMF).

Cherry Audio CR-78 – Like The Original, Only WAY Better

You’ve got velocity sensitivity, external MIDI triggering, a Song Mode with 99 patterns, and 99 steps per song. The plugin comes with a ‘separate outs’ version so you can process each instrument individually in your DAW.

Cherry Audio CR-78

And, as one has come to expect, Cherry Audio has packed this full of amazing presets. There are subtly named recreations of many classic patterns as well as a huge number of original presets that also take advantage of all the new features.

More Information

Cherry Audio’s CR-78 is available here at the Thomann shop (affiliate) for just $49 USD. A free 30-day demo is also available from the Cherry Audio website.
