AudioThing x Hainbach Lines: Experimental Multieffect & Feedback Synth
AudioThing has once again teamed up with Hainbach to create Lines, a mesmerizingly unique multi-effect and feedback synth that delivers anything from lo-fi effects to rhythms to organic soundscapes. Be prepared to have your mind blown!
Audiothing x Hainbach Lines
The sixth plugin developed by AudioThing and Hainbach, Lines is no less unique than its predecessors like Dials, Noises, or Wires. Once again, the Berlin-based electroacoustic adventurer has dug up a piece of hardware that was never intended for musical applications and turned it into an effect and instrument unlike any other.
AudioThing Lines is inspired by the rare Axel Line Simulator, a device originally designed to emulate the signal loss that occurs in analog telephone and data lines. It achieves this through a plethora of analog effects like jitter, noise, intermittent pulses, frequency shifting, distortion, and bandpass filtering.
But Lines is so much more than a telephone line simulator. According to Hainbach, the device turns into a unique instrument when you feed its output back into the input, resulting in intricate rhythms and strange textures. Or, as Hainbach puts it: “It’s full of birds!” Add an input signal into the mix, and Lines will transform it in all sorts of unpredictable ways.
AudioThing and Hainbach started by first simulating the feedback and signal path of the original device on the component level. But they didnโt stop there. By adding additional features like fine-tunable filters, more range for the frequency shifter, a versatile pulse sequencer, and sync and modulation options, Lines takes the Axel Line Simulator and turns it into a box full of musical surprises.
So is it an effect? Is it an instrument? In a way, itโs both. You can use the array of analog-modeled circuits to mangle any input signal in ways previously unheard of. But Lines can also make sounds by itself, which makes it an experimental feedback-based synth and rhythm generator.
