These days you’ll find synths with incredible sound-shaping capabilities in different price ranges. Let’s take a closer look at the offers currently available:

IK Multimedia UNO Synth Pro X

The UNO Synth Pro X is a versatile paraphonic analogue desktop synth with an arpeggiator, a 64-step pattern sequencer, and a built-in effects section. Creating sounds starts with the 3 oscillators, each of which has PWM, sync, FM, and ring modulation.

From there, you have access to extensive sound shaping capabilities with the 24-mode dual state-variable filter, two LFOs, two envelopes, and a 16-slot modulation matrix.

For added expression, there are three effects slots with a choice of reverbs, delays, modulation effects like vintage chorus and vibrato. Overall, the UNO Synth Pro X offers a great deal of value.

SOMA Lyra-8 Black Beast

If you’re looking for a slightly different approach to synthesis, the SOMA Lyra-8 provides an 8-oscillator 8-voice analogue platform for sound exploration and creation.

For starters, each voice can be individually tuned with a wide pitch range, and there’s a simple AD envelope per voice for basic shaping. When pairing voices, you can add FM modulation as well as control the mix between triangle and square waveforms.

The Lyra-8 is triggered via CV or the metal contact keys on the top panel, and the modulation delay can create some truly interesting soundscapes. Moreover, there is also a drive knob to add texture to your sounds.

Roland MC-707

The Roland MC-707 continues the Groovebox legacy with its powerful 12-voice ZEN-Core sound engine and 8-part multitimbrality. Its design is focused around the 8-track sequencer, with two MIDI outputs, and two stereo audio outputs.

In addition to controlling external instruments, the MC-707 has sampling capabilities and you can create up to eight loop tracks. The onboard sound library offers 80 drum kits and a total of 3000 presets, plus there is extensive effects processing power.

Aside from the stereo effects loop on the rear panel, there is a range of 90 different per-part effect types and a master effects section with compression, EQ, delay, reverb, and chorus.

Jomox Mod FM

The Jomox Mod FM is a monster 56 HP hybrid FM eurorack synth module with eight individual voices. You get amazing flexibility per voice with the 4-operator FM engine with 26 algorithms, one envelope per operator, two LFO/VCO, two analog filters, and an analog VCA.

The analogue filter section gives you a 24 dB low-pass filter, a multimode 12 dB filter (low-pass, high-pass, and band-pass), and an envelope. Meanwhile, there are 12 CV inputs for modulation and 64 LFO waveforms to choose from.

The Mod FM also has individual outputs for all eight of its voices. When combined with the built-in reverb and delay effects, it becomes a versatile creative FM synth capable of producing an incredible range of sounds.
