The Yamaha HS3 and HS4 are new compact additions to the popular HS family of active nearfield studio monitors.

Just in time for the holidays, Yamaha extends this monitor line inspired by the famous NS-10. Although smaller, the new HS3 and HS4 monitors are designed with the same MDF housings as their larger siblings.

Sold in pairs, the HS3 and HS4 are equipped with 3.5 and 4.5-inch drivers respectively. In each case, the left speaker carries a powerful Class D amplifier, and the right speaker is passive which allows for easy setup and transportation.

Besides the driver size, there is also a slight difference in the tweeter design. Specifically, the HS3 has a 0.75-inch fabric dome tweeter, while the HS4 is equipped with a 1-inch tweeter.

On the rear panel, both models are rear-ported with bass reflex tunnels. Built with “Twisted Flair” technology to reduce noise and ensure solid performance, the HS3 can reproduce frequencies down to 70 Hz, and the HS4 goes down to 60 Hz.

In familiar fashion, you’ll find the same high-frequency trim and room control features as the rest of the HS series studio monitors. However, connectivity is slightly different, with all inputs located on the left speaker.

Here you’ll find a pair of balanced XLR combo inputs, a set of unbalanced RCA inputs, and a stereo minijack input for consumer devices. Meanwhile, the power switch, volume control, and headphones output are located on the front.

Overall, the new HS models offer creators and musicians a perfect solution for home recording and audio editing. What’s more their size makes them easy to travel with, so you can easily relocate your setup to new surroundings.

4dB down at 500Hz? What sort of room problem needs that particular correction?
