Sony has announced the C-80 condenser vocal microphone. The uni-directional C-80 combines elements of the C-100 and the famous C-800G, but at a much lower price point. It’s mainly geared toward vocal and voice recording, but there’s nothing stopping you from using it for instruments, as well.

The new Sony C-80 is a uni-directional condenser microphone with a frequency range of 20 Hz to 20 kHz. Sony says that its rich lower midrange makes it ideal for vocals and voice recordings.

The dual-diaphragm design is inspired by the capsule of the C-100 and uses the same material as the C-800G. According to Sony, this configuration helps to suppress the proximity effect, which results in more stable recording conditions. The C-80 also inherits the two-part metallic body structure from its two pricey predecessors, which helps to reduce noise by preventing vibration.

In addition to a switchable low-cut filter, the C-80 features a -10 dB pad switch for extra headroom and less distortion when recording loud sources.

While the C-80 could be an excellent addition to any existing microphone collection, Sony says that it’s also a great choice for anyone just getting into recording – and with the C-80’s focus on voice, that also includes streaming and podcasting.

The Sony C-80 comes with a cradle shock mount and carrying case.
