Do we need another PAF pickup clone?
I love a nice PAF humbucker, that mellow touch-sensitive classic sound has been on some of my favourite ever guitar recordings. The whole guitar pickup aftermarket is awash with them though, and it is almost a joke how many are out there now. It’s a bit of a minefield and so when I overheard on the grapevine that yet another builder was making one I must say I was a little underwhelmed at first. That is, until I heard who was building them.
So turns out that none other than Ash Scott-Lockyer of UK guitar pickups company Oil City Pickups is now winding a completely hand-made PAF clone. The reason I am impressed? Well this is the man that named an entire range of Stratocaster pickups after me!
Ash is a man of many talents and one of these is building pickups. So good is he that many major artists and companies are clambering to get at his work. I had him build me some pickups for myself a few years back and they were so good, that he asked if he could use my name on them and now they are one of his biggest sellers.
So when the rumour hit me last week that he was working on this new Masterwound series it immediately piqued my interest. I have first hand experience of Oil City Pickups and if the rumours are true that he is about to launch these then I am truly excited. This man is up there with the best and is one of the UK’s top winders of boutique handmade pickups. His attention to detail is legendary and second to none, so expect great things from this master winder.
