With an extensive range of headphones already available, AKG are releasing this new line of closed-backed headphones. Aimed at engineers, producers and musicians on a budget, they are described as “pro quality sound meets style and affordability”.

Available in 3 models – K52, K72 and K92 – these new ‘project studio headphones’ certainly look the part, particularly the gold trim on the K92. The materials used are supposed to be very durable and light-weight. The large over-ear design, light-weight aspect and self-adjusting headband should mean they are very comfortable to wear. However, with all this in mind, I wonder if they will feel like quality products.

All the right elements are in place to potentially prove them to be a highly professional product. The talking points include: high quality drivers producing an impressive frequency range, changeable ear pads and a long cable with a 6.3mm screw-on adapter. Impedance for all 3 models is 32 Ohms, hopefully allowing them to perform well with personal mp3 players as well as pro audio equipment. Apparently the frequency range for the K52 is 18Hz – 20kHz, the K72 is 16Hz – 20kHz and the K92 is 16Hz – 22kHz.

On paper these new headphones look great. Besides actually hearing them, the light-weight materials make me interested to find out what the build quality and sound isolation properties are really like. After all, if these are intended to be closed-backed headphones for recording with, you don’t want to be hearing the click track on your mic.

Official recommended retail prices aren’t clear yet, but I believe they will be very reasonable and therefore a very popular choice.
