We look into the creative process of world-renowned and critically acclaimed drummer, singer, songwriter, and producer Phil Collins.

After developing a reputation as a session drummer and a key member of the English progressive rock band, Genesis, Phil Collins began his career as a solo artist.

The Phil Collins Sound

He may have been unaware, but looking back, the timing of this foray was ideal. The period in the late 1970s and early 1980s was completely revolutionary for the recording industry, with so many new creative musical tools introduced onto the market.

Another interesting aspect of Phil Collins’ approach to music production is that he never intended to write hits initially. Rather than fame or commercial success, he simply saw his solo project as an artistic outlet that offered him the freedom of expression he wanted.

Roland CompuRhythm CR-78

Introduced by Roland in 1978, the CompuRhythm CR-78 was the first-ever microprocessor-controlled drum machine. Although limited, it has the ability to select and vary 34 different rhythm patterns.

Roland CR-78
Roland CR-78

With its intuitive interface, the CR-78 became an absolutely integral part of Phil’s songwriting process. He would start by selecting the rhythm part with the right “atmosphere” as he put it, and setting the tempo to match the feel he had in mind.

With the tape machine running, the CR-78 was always positioned just next to Phil’s drum kit. This way, he could play drums and sing over the unrelenting loops created by the CR-78, building ideas and arrangement concepts as he went.

If you’re looking for the classic CompuRhythm sound with all its familiar drum patterns, the Cherry Audio CR-78 plug-in provides an easy way to recreate it in your DAW.

Sequential Circuits Prophet-5

When Phil went solo in the late 1970s, there wasn’t a massive range of polyphonic synths available like we have today. That being said, many of us would likely still prefer a Prophet-5 over many modern options.

Sequential Circuits Prophet-5
Sequential Circuits Prophet-5

The illustrious Prophet 5 was still quite new on the market when Phil began work on his debut album. With its simple controls and 5-voice architecture, you can generate anything from innocuous to outrageous sounds.

The beauty of the Prophet is that it’s easy to program, and like the Oberheim OB-8 he also acquired later, it always managed to sound interesting, whether it was placed in the background or the foreground of the mix.

You can hear the famous Prophet-5 chord sequence in the intro of In The Air Tonight, where it becomes the foundation of the song, along with the CR-78. The Sequential Prophet-5 is still in production as a reissue that can mimic the original’s various revisions.

Roland VP-330 Vocoder Plus

The VP-330 Vocoder Plus is another exciting instrument used by Phil Collins on his debut solo recordings, notably on In The Air Tonight. This sought-after instrument combines a paraphonic 10-band vocoder and a string synthesizer.

Roland VP-330
Roland VP-330

With the VP-330, you don’t actually have access to control each individual band. However, the presets sound great, and when combined with the BBD Ensemble effect, you can produce a hauntingly beautiful sound.

The fact that the VP-330 is relatively easy to use would have suited Phil nicely when putting together his first record, Face Value. His improvisational song and lyric writing style relies on spontaneity, so highly technical interfaces can sometimes hinder this.

As a modern alternative, the Behringer VC340 gives you the same authentic sound with an almost identical interface. Its limitation could well be a catalyst for creativity when making any style of music.

SSL Listen Mic Compressor

Like most of the creatively groundbreaking aspects of the early Phil Collins records, the ideas came together while simply “messing around”. Similarly, the famous Phil Collins gated drum sound has an origin story that is also unintentional.

SSL SL 4000 E Series
SSL SL 4000 E Series

In 1979, engineer Hugh Padgham was working on a Phil Collins drum session for Peter Gabriel’s third solo album at Townhouse Studio in London. By accident, the talkback mic was left active while Phil was playing, resulting in a thunderous effect.

As the talkback circuit in the SSL 4000 B console couldn’t be patched into the recording path, Padgham promptly rewired it, allowing his mistake with the Listen Mic Compressor to be used creatively.

What we hear on the subsequent Phil Collins drum recordings is a more evolved version of this, with the addition of the recording console’s noise gate implemented.

AMS RMX16

The AMS RMX16 is a legendary digital reverb introduced in the early 1980s that Phil Collins was an early adopter of. It offered a selection of great-sounding reverbs and ambiences, with the now legendary non-linear algorithm that worked well on drums.

AMS RMX16 Reverb
AMS RMX16

Once again, the interface is certainly Phil Collins friendly, offering easy operation and the ability to save your own presets. This allows the RMX16 to be used creatively rather than clinically, which suited Phil’s songwriting process.

At the time, there simply weren’t microprocessor-controlled reverb units like the RMX16 around that gave you both precision and flexibility. So it’s no surprise that it’s still a sought-after reverb in both plug-in and hardware format today.

In recent years, AMS Neve has created a 500-series reissue of the RMX16 with a similar interface and the same reverb algorithms, a great addition to any studio setup.

Elektron Model:Cycles

The Elektron Model:Cycles is an FM-based 6 track groove box from one of the most innovative manufacturers today. Using a similar workflow to other Elektron units (think Digitakt, etc.), the Model:Cycles gives you the punch, power and digital crispness of FM.

But don’t be fooled by its digital leanings. The Model:Cycles can sound thick and warm too. Using dedicated Color, Shape and Contour features, you can mould the sounds to your tastes, whatever genre you’re working in.

The Model:Cycles can store 96 projects onboard with 96 patterns per project. Delay and reverb effects are built-in and any of its six tracks can also be used as MIDI tracks. But it isn’t just drums that the Model:Cycles can handle. You can create melodic bass lines and chords. So this is a great compositional tool and not just a drum machine!

The Cherry Audio CR-78 is its very first drum machine plugin with a recreation of a true classic, the first programmable, microprocessor-controlled, analog CR-78!

Cherry Audio CR-78 And A Short History

Before the 808 and 909, Roland had a long and rich history in the world of rhythm boxes. They’ve been building such devices since 1964. However, 1978’s CompuRhythm CR-78 was their, and the world’s, first programmable unit.

Alex Ball demonstrates the original CR-78

It seems inconceivable these days to have a drum machine that you can’t program, so the CR-78 was a huge hit! And it was a huge hit that ended up on numerous huge hits! The list of songs and artists is a veritable who’s who of pop. OMD, Hall & Oates, Genesis, Phill Collins, Ultravox, Blondie, Roxy Music, The Cars, and Tears For Fears, to name just a few.

The CR-78 is still gaining new friends to this day and remains incredibly popular. So it is an utter delight to see Cherry Audio beat Roland Cloud to the punch (again) with their new CR-78 plugin. Everything we love about the original – lovingly modelled, not sampled – with all the improvements that a 21st-century rhythm nut craves!

Cherry Audio’s CR-78 Launch Video

Cherry On Top

How does it improve on the original? First up, the rather clunky original method of programming a CR-78 has been replaced with the later X0X style of step sequencing found on later Roland units. The original CR-78 required an optional programming unit. Bizarrely, Roland only ever made 2000 of these, one-quarter of the total number of CR-78s that they made!

Cherry Audio CR-78

Cherry Audio’s CR-78 goes way beyond just improving the programming. All the original preset rhythms and variations/fills are there but now every voice can be edited. There’s an FX section (Overdrive, Delay, Flanger & Reverb), a mixer with independent level, pan, and solo/mute per voice, and a global EQ and compressor. Once you’ve programmed your beat masterpiece, you can drag it OUT of the CR-78 as either a MIDI track in your DAW or, if using the standalone version, a Standard MIDI File (SMF).

Cherry Audio CR-78 – Like The Original, Only WAY Better

You’ve got velocity sensitivity, external MIDI triggering, a Song Mode with 99 patterns, and 99 steps per song. The plugin comes with a ‘separate outs’ version so you can process each instrument individually in your DAW.

Cherry Audio CR-78

And, as one has come to expect, Cherry Audio has packed this full of amazing presets. There are subtly named recreations of many classic patterns as well as a huge number of original presets that also take advantage of all the new features.

The Linn LM-1 was truly a game-changing piece of technology. How much do you have to spend to get that sound and feel in your music?

In the pantheon of great drum machines, the Linn LM-1 stands tall amongst its peers. It set the gold standard for sample-based drum machines and effectively killed off its analog competitors. Why have a machine trying to sound like real drums? Here’s one that uses recordings of them!

The list of LM-1 users is as long as both my arms put together. It became THE drum sound that everybody wanted. People like Prince took it to another level, cleverly exploiting its tuning features to great effect. Other artists had Roger Linn burn their drum sounds onto EPROM chips.

LM-1 For Sale

They weren’t cheap and they were not produced in vast quantities. This means that when they come up for sale, they typically command a very high price. And one such example appeared on the Reverb retail site just recently. Priced at €35,000 EUR (a smidge over £28,000 GBP), it certainly perpetuates the high-ticket perception.

Little is said about it and there are only three pictures provided. If I were to consider splashing out that kind of money, I’d want a lot more evidence of its condition. Located in Bologna, Italy, shipping would be extra. And trust me, you don’t want to scrimp on that front with something so rare and delicate.

Luma-1 Drum Computer

Back in the real world there are, thankfully, some alternatives to get that classic LM-1 sound. Probably the best option if you’re looking at hardware is the fantastic Luma-1 recreation of the LM-1. The brainchild of wunderkind Joe Britt, the Luma-1 is an incredible recreation of the LM-1 but with modern-day electronics mixed with vintage-design components.

Endorsed by Roger Linn himself, the Luma-1 can do everything an LM-1 can and much more. You can easily load your own sounds in via USB. No more burning of EPROMS. It has full USB and MIDI capabilities and is hand-built in California, just like the originals.

Priced at ¢4,500 USD, this has to be the ultimate LM-1 to have in 2024. Brand new, reliable components, full warranty and support. Why anyone would buy an original over this is beyond my comprehension. Unless, of course, the vintage one had some historic provenance. But even then…

Aly James Labs VPROM

If software is your bag, then I can highly recommend the Aly James Lab VPROM plug in. This incredibly affordable piece of software not only captures the sound of the LM-1 but also the feel. Often overlooked by other sample-based efforts, Aly has managed to properly recreate the nuances of the original hardware, such as the tiny delay on the snare sample and the way the hi-hat cycles the sample all the time.

alyjameslab VProm GUI LinnDrum Emulation
Aly James Lab’s excellent VProm, an awesome EPROM-level LM-1/LinnDrum emulation

As well as being a great LM-1 impersonator, you can also “insert” other virtual EPROMs in the shape of ROM files. This makes VPROM a brilliant Oberheim DX, for example.

Consider a LinnDrum Instead?

LinnDrum’s can be a bit more prevalent on the used market. This particular example on eBay is selling for £500 more than a brand-new Luma-1.

And let’s not forget that Behringer has long-threatened to make a LinnDrum clone, which we have yet to see.

Something For Everyone

Deep pockets are not always necessary to get certain special sounds, but for a collector of absolute classic electronic music hardware, this LM-1 might just be what they are looking for. Let us know in the comments what you think of such prices and your other favourite Linn drum machine alternatives.

A selection of new finishes for some of Ludwig’s most popular ranges of drums were announced at NAMM 2024, some of which are limited editions!

Vistalite in Purple

Ludwig’s legendary Vistalite series of drums has received a new addition to the range with the introduction of a snazzy purple. Vistalite are the transparent acrylic drums made famous by the likes of John Bonham. Looking like something from a candy store, these have always been eye-catching shells. Now we have a lovely purple example. This joins amber, blue yellow and clear versions.

Aside from looking cool, these acrylic shells sound amazing. I mean, if Bonzo approved, who are we to argue?

Size isn’t everything, or so they say, and the new EFNOTE Mini certainly supports that claim. How cute can an e-Drum kit be? Very, if this is anything to go by!

In previous features here on the Gearnews Drum channel, we’ve looked at kits for beginners. These are often cut-down kits with small pads. Kits that don’t take up a lot of room or budget. But why should one compromise on style simply to take up less room? Why can’t we have both? Well, according to EFNOTE, we now can…

The EFNOTE Mini

EFNOTE Mini

EFNOTE Mini

Even smaller than their EFMOTE 5 compact kit, the EFNOTE Mini takes things even further. Still weighing in with a kick, snare, mounted tom and floor tom, everything looks like it got stuck in the tumble dryer at the wrong heat. There are even two cymbals and a hi-hat of equally minimal stature!

Furthermore, there’s no cutting back on the metalwork either. Double-braced stands are all in attendance. So what do you get in the Mini? Drums are as follows:

  • 14×10″ kick drum
  • 10×4.5″ snare drum (head/rim/side-rim)
  • 8×6.5″ rack tom (head/rim)
  • 10×10″ floor tom (head/rim)

These are all made using real birch shells.

And as far as cymbals go, you get a 12″ Hi-Hat, 8″ Splash/Crash and a 16″ Ride. All of these feature 360º bow and edge sensors and the ride also has a bell trigger. There’s also room for expansion by adding a 14″ Crash or 18″ Ride and an extra tom. All in all, this kit occupies a mere 0.8m²!

EFNOTE Mini

EFNOTE Mini

What the kit doesn’t come with is a kick pedal, Hi-Hat stand and drum throne.

Mini Size, Maxi Sound

The included EFD Mini Sound Module supports triple-zoned snares and rides, dual-zoned toms and a single-zone kick. It comes with 12 editable preset kits, space for 18 of your own creations and a multitude of drum samples built in. It also doubles up as an audio interface with both USB-C and Bluetooth audio/MIDI connectivity. There’s even room for EQ and FX.

Whether you’re looking for a kit for the ‘Mini Me’ in your life, or simply something small to practice on at home, the EFNOTE Mini will tick all the boxes.

Yamaha Drums have launched a range of new finishes to their entry-level Rydeen range of kits, plus a new and versatile Hi-Hat stand.

Yamaha Rydeen New Finishes

You know how it is. You’re on a tight budget. You want some new drums or maybe your kid does. All the budget, affordable kits are black and boring. You want something that stands out. Heck, why should guitarists be the only ones with cool colours? Yamaha have been listening…

Rydeen is the affordable 5-piece range from Yamaha drums. These kits are super-affordable and do not scrimp on the quality to do so. And now they’re available in a total of eight new finishes! Five of these have launched today. They are:

  • Orange Glitter
  • Turquoise Glitter
  • Champagne Glitter
  • Gloss Pale Blue
  • Sky Blue

Rydeen kits already represent great value for money. They’re available in two different kit configurations (one has a slightly bigger kick and floor tom than the other) and already use Yamaha’s standard stands and braces, meaning they’re easy to build on in the future. The shells are 6-ply poplar and with these new finishes, you can really stand out in the crowd, even if the band keep sticking you at the back!

Hi-Performance Hi-Hat

Most would argue that the Hi-Hat is the most expressive piece of metalware in your drum kit. So that very important member of your kit needs some solid hardware and that’s exactly what the new Yamaha Drums HHS9D delivers.

Based around Yamaha’s Direct Link system (no chains here!), it features a brand new LC9 clutch and harder felts. According to Yamaha, these felts lead directly to a significant sound improvement. The HHS9D oozes class with its mirrored foot plate and snazzy blue inserts. But it’s not all looks. There’s also an alloy spring tension dial with five tension increments and the double-braced legs can be set to almost any position you could wish for, allowing you to incorporate other pedals very easily.
