The Classic Reimagined: Meet the Shure SM7dB
The Shure SM7dB is a new version of the industry-standard podcast mic, now with an integrated preamp. Let’s take a look at how this household recording design has been updated for the modern world of content creation.
There’s no disputing the quality of the original SM7B or its illustrious predecessor, the SM7, when it comes to recording speech and vocals.
However, if you’ve used the SM7B or a similar low-output dynamic mic, you’ll know how useless it is without decent preamplification.
Shure SM7dB
In the context of today’s recording landscape, less is definitely more when it comes to setup times. So convenience is king, and when you combine this with a quality microphone design like the SM7B, you get what looks like a winning formula.
Over the years, Shure has expanded its line of content creator mics with the MV7 and MV7X as more accessible alternatives and now, the SM7dB becomes the flagship of this range.
The new integrated preamp offers two different gain settings: +18 and +28 dB. However, what’s interesting is that you can also bypass the preamp if you wish, which makes the SM7dB more versatile.
The control panel on the base of the mic also includes the classic mid-boost and bass roll-off switches, to better focus your sound source. Overall, Shure has chosen the analogue route here rather than making this a USB mic, an update that could follow suit.
