Audio Damage has released Other Desert Cities. Named after a highway sign in Los Angeles, the plug-in is a creative multi-tap delay that ventures off the beaten path by adding several unique algorithms, granular delays and plenty of modulation.

It’s hard to improve upon an effect as ubiquitous as delay. But every once in a while, a plug-in comes along that manages to give the classic effect a new twist. That’s clearly the case with Other Desert Cities, the latest release by Audio Damage. Sure, it’ll do basic repetitions if you ask it too. But its true strength lies in heavily modulated, otherworldly textures that you wouldn’t necessarily associate with a delay at all.

Other Desert Cities offers six delay algorithms, each with its own set of parameters for creative exploitation. For more traditional delays, there’s a standard stereo multi-tap and a reverse version. It gets more experimental with the Cactus Dual-Delta algorithm, which simulates a pair of tape delays with individual pitch controls and pitch quantizing, and the Thermal Multi-Tap Delay. The Mirage Multi-Head Delay is an experimental tape delay with a rotating head, like a VCR. And finally, there’s a pitch shifting granular delay called Sky Valley.

The diffusor creates reverb-like textures

Each of these algorithms has its own personality and comes with an extensive set of parameters for getting creative. Pair any algorithm with the diffusor (which, as Audio Damage points out, is inspired by the Intellijel Rainmaker Eurorack module), and you’ll end up with a more washed-out sound more akin to a reverb.

Extensive modulation capabilities

Other Desert Cities also features a fully-fledged modulation section. In addition to two tempo-synced LFOs, the plug-in offers an envelope follower, which can be driven by the source signal or a sidechain input. You can use these to modulate nearly every control of the user interface, which opens up a world of possibilities for creative effects. The controls of the plug-in’s extensive input and output sections can also be modulated, which means that Other Desert Cities has ducking and panning capabilities built in.

There’s a lot to discover here. If you’re into creative delays that go beyond the traditional scope of the effect, Other Desert Cities should definitely be on your list.

Seriously? This what the update from dubstation 1 to version 2 should include.
