An Italian dealer has leaked a new Strymon. Cloudburst Ambient Reverb pedal. Apparently, it will be an ambient reverb in a smaller more compact pedal housing.

Strymon Cloudburst Ambient Reverb

An Italian dealer was a bit hasty publishing a page and it appeared on Google search for Strymon reverbs. Thankfully, this page was also cached by Google despite the page already being taken offline. I found this leak myself and put it on my personal guitar blog where it was picked up by some of the regular readers.

I was then contacted by readers who had also found more information from yet another Italian online store, so it looks like it is real and not fake. More information has surfaced slowly over on TGP and Reddit.

Ambient Reverb

Cloudburst is the name of Strymon’s effect pedal. It is referred to as an Ambient Reverb and looks to be another DSP-based effect device. It is also highly likely to be a variation on an existing reverb algorithm from the company’s Big Sky reverb pedal.

My guess is that Strymon is getting as much mileage from their BigSky algorithm as possible. Which would make sense after the release of last year’s BigSky Plugin.

Expected features

Unfortunately, there is only a pretty small low-resolution picture. The page at the dealer also reveals nothing more than the name and price of 319 euros.

The controls we can see consist of Decay, Mix, Pre-Delay, Tone and Mod. Plus, a toggle switch with an “Ensemble” label and three positions.

In addition, there are three connections on the top. Input, output and maybe a TRS-FX loop or a stereo out? Or Expression/CV/MIDI connection? Anything would be possible, but the loop is unlikely with a reverb.

Official information

There is currently no more official information available.

Not everyone wants and needs the scope of the Big Sky* and they cost 529 euros*. However, the price difference between a single algorithm vs. 12 reverbs would make this new pedal quite expensive.

A date of  6 February was also shown by another Italian dealer. Therefore it could be out very soon.

MSRP – €319?

It’s harsh but I don’t like Strymon’s model. You have to buy a new computer for every effect? It uses an ancient interface?

Brothers and sisters in Christ. Just get a helix stomp. It’s got 20 reverbs and you can just use the dsp chip to do…everything else you want without having to buy a new helix stomp for each effect.

Glad Strymon is making money and all that but as a consumer this model is just outrageous.

Counterpoint – some people would prefer really good individual pedals than a bunch of okay effects. It’s nice to have a variety of choices out there (beyond Line 6).

If you’re telling me the reverb models in the Helix sound anywhere near as good as this, or the myriad other specialised reverb pedals out there, I’ll take a second look, but in my experience the all-in-ones have not been very good when it comes to space and time effects. I have a Headrush and had to use the FX send to my Big Sky and Cathedral because I simply could not reproduce the sounds they gave me.

The HX Stomp can now actually mimic reverbs you get with Strymon or Meris. Tons of updates to the Stomp recently with some really incredible sounds.

I have a love of reverbs. My Big Sky was one of my favs, but I sold it, and my Boss Rv-500, while keeping my Source Audio Collider. All 3 are excellent very usable pedals, but the Collider bang for the buck had me.
I’ve been eagerly waiting for the next bug Strymon Reverb. I don’t think this is it. Seems like an expensive one trick pony.
