Mooer has followed up on its Hornet modelling amp with a new version, the Hornet White. Both share the same amp, speaker and controls, with the new White version offering different amp models. And a white exterior, of course. Considering the low price point, the Hornet models have plenty of useful features, like nine amp modes generating arrange of usable amp tones. But will this amp make its mark in the face of stiff competition from the likes of Blackstar, IK Multimedia and Yamaha?

This amp is almost the same as the existing Hornet, which Mooer is now calling the Hornet Black. Except for two aspects: the colour and the amp models. All other specs are the same as the Black version: a mini combo amp with a 6.5-inch speaker, the same control panel with a display,  an onboard tuner, Modulation, Delay and Reverb effects with independent tap tempo for both modes of operation.

Like the Black version, the Hornet White has nine different amp modes. The modelled amps are different to the original Hornet, though. While the original included models based on amps like Mesa Triple Rectifier, Roland JC120, Bogner Überschall, Engl Powerball in amongst Fender Twin Reverb and Marshall Plexi, the White version is perhaps a bit more conservative in its amp selection:

  • Fender 65 Twin Reverb Normal Channel
  • Mesa Boogie Mark Iii Clean Channel
  • Fender Blues Deluxe
  • Marshall Plexi 100
  • Two Rock Coral Od Channel
  • Marshall Jcm 900
  • Mesa Boogie Mark III Lead Channel
  • Bass: Aguilar Db 715
  • Acoustic: Mooer Acoustic

Which mini amp should I buy?

I like little amps like these. I use an older Yamaha model from the recently revamped THR-II Series. This new Mooer isn’t quite as fully featured as the Yamaha series, but it does come in a a much lower price point and so will be one to consider for players that are counting their pennies at the moment. tThe mini amp market is hotly contested, with lots of amps available covering all price points. If you’re looking to buy a compact practise amp, you should check out the Blackstar Fly 3 , the IK Multimedia iRig Micro Amp and the Yamaha THR-II series. Mooer’s Hornet has some stiff competition. But at this price point, I reckon it will appeal to many. You can hear it in action in the official demo video below.

RRP: GBP 100 / EUR 119
