Focusrite has announced the updated Clarett+ OctoPre 8-channel ADAT preamplifier. This means that the improved features of the Clarett+ range of audio interfaces are now also available in the company’s flagship ADAT preamp and AD/DA converter. The Clarett+ OctoPre allows you to expand an ADAT-equipped audio interface with eight additional microphone preamps.

Back in September of last year, Focusrite introduced the updated Clarett+ series of audio interfaces. While the features and I/O configurations are the same as the original Clarett series, the Clarett+ range offers improved converters, a better dynamic range, and lower distortion.

The one member of the Clarett family that wasn’t updated at that point was the Clarett OctoPre 8-channel ADAT preamp and AD/DA converter. Today, Focusrite announced the Clarett+ OctoPre, bringing the last member of the family to the new standard.

It should be noted that the Clarett+ OctoPre isn’t an audio interface of its own. Instead, it connects to an interface equipped with an ADAT input (such as the Clarett+ series) and provides eight additional analogue inputs with microphone preamps, as well as eight additional line outputs. This allows you to expand your setup and add additional analogue I/O channels without having to buy a whole new interface.

Analogue Air Mode

The preamps feature an analogue Air mode, which emulates the classic Focusrite ISA 110 design from the Studio Console. It’s based on impedance switching and relay-controlled analogue circuitry, and Focusrite says that it helps to capture transients and make vocals shine. Furthermore, the fully balanced signal path ensures low noise and low distortion. You can activate phantom power in groups of four channels. Each input channel also offers a switchable insert point for looping in compressors, equalizers, or other outboard gear.

In addition to this, the Clarett+ OctoPre features JFET guitar inputs, eight analogue line outputs on a D-SUB connector, and word clock I/O.

Just like the audio interfaces, the Clarett+ OctoPre features updated AD/DA converters with lower noise and distortion levels. Focusrite states a dynamic range of 118 dB and 129 dBu EIN. The OctoPre converts at up to 192 kHz / 24 bit. However, due to the limitations of the ADAT standard, only four channels of I/O are available at the highest resolution. All eight channels are supported at up to 96 kHz.

All in all, the changes might seem minor compared to the original Clarett OctoPre. But the new version brings the 8-channel ADAT preamp up to spec with the current Clarett+ series audio interfaces. This ensures a consistent sound across your entire setup.
