The SSL 12 is the new flagship of the SSL line of desktop interfaces. With an emphasis on more professional features, the 12 is designed to become the central hub of your home recording setup or podcast studio.
It might look identical to the SSL 2 and 2+, but the 12 has some details worth noting on closer inspection. Let’s see what the key features are that make it a more formidable tool.
Is the SSL 12 just bigger?
Besides having a total of four preamps and four balanced TRS outputs, the 12 also has two instrument inputs conveniently positioned on the front.
On the rear panel, the most interesting feature by far for most audio users out there is the addition of an ADAT input. This allows you to expand your 12 with an additional preamp module, making it a more sustainable piece of gear.

Because of the separate instrument inputs, the mic pres now have useful low-cut filters instead of the input impedance switches found on the smaller 2+. What’s more, you now have a useful talkback switch on the main panel.
There’s also software included such as NI Komplete Start Hybrid Keys, SSL Vocalstrip and Drumstrip, Ableton Live Lite, and 1.5 GB of loops and samples from Loopcloud.
Overall, it’s a more professional-grade interface in a larger form factor that provides a hub for all your audio operations.
