Serato, makers of the popular DJ software of the same name, are taking their developments in an interesting direction. The company has introduced Serato Studio, a music-production oriented DAW that has at least two noteworthy things about it.

First off, it incorporates DJ techniques like cue points, time-stretching, and key detection. So if you ever wanted to approaching a project like a DJ would, but don’t have the time or desire to climb the learning curve, Serato Studio is a fair chance at making some music this way.

Second, Serato Studio is essentially a groovebox. It comes with a hefty slice of ready-made sounds and integrates with MIDI controllers & Serato hardware to let you make beats using whatever you got at hand – it could be your laptop’s touchpad, even. Serato Studio is beginner-friendly and fairly simplified, but this kind of no-nonsense design tends to yield musical results quicker as there are less distractions. It’s also useful on some levels.

With Serato Studio, DJs can take baby steps into beatmaking and music production. Producers looking to get into DJ-ing can experiment inside a more familiar environment, without investing in decks or DJ software. More advanced users can try running audio through Serato Studio, taking advantage of its DJ playback and mixing facilities to possibly come up with some interesting arrangements and sound design, or remix their tunes.

Serato Studio is now in beta. Interested users can sign up for testing on the official website. The DAW will be offered as a subscription-based service, alas without a rent-to-own option in sight.
